MDSU-1

Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit ONE (MDSU-1) was commissioned as Harbor Clearance Unit One (HCU-1) in February 1966 in Subic Bay, Republic of the Philippines.

The command was immediately put to test in Vietnam. During the conflict, salvage teams conducted hundreds of harbor clearance operations in Vietnamese rivers, harbors, coastal areas, and inland waterways.

At the conclusion of the Vietnam conflict, the command was relocated to Pearl Harbor, HI. In 1982, the name of the unit was changed back to Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit ONE to more closely reflect the capabilities of the unit.

It was brought to my attention this past week that the Navy has decided to decommission MDSU-1. The article can be found in the Navy Times at: http://www.navytimes.com/news/2009/02/navy_salvage_cuts_021809w/
